What is a civilisation?
The word civilisation comes from the Latin word 'civitas' which means 'city'. A civilisation forms when groups of people come and live together. They form cities and develop a way of life of thier own. These people form cities and develop a way of life on thier own. These people have different occupations, belong to different social classes and are ruled by a government. They usually have a religion and practise a form of writing.
Factors For the Development of Civilisations
A Good
Water Supply
Fertile
Land
Abundant
Food Supply
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a) A good water supply
is very important in a civilisation because people need water to live.
i.e, to drink, wash clothes, cook, for transport and to irrigate the fields.
b) Fertile land is important
as well because it enables people to grow crops for food. Then they have
no need to spend a lot of time hunting animals for food.
c) Without abundant food
supply, the people will not have enough food to eat and might starve to
death. If there is an abundant food supply it means that not everybody
would be concerned with providing food. Different people will do different
jobs.
One of the earliest civilisations in the world
was found in the Indus Valley in India, the Indus Valley
Civilisation. At about 3000 B.C., a group of people came from the North
to settle in the Indus Valley. They were known as Dravidians.
Dravidians were dark-skinned, and not very tall.
